The Cell Rules of Grooming School

A fellow groomer with a small business send me this message the other day: “Do you have policies in place at your work place about employees using cell phones on the job? My assistant got a cell phone last fall and I am having a problem with the constant interruptions. He is constantly taking out his phone and stopping to either read a text, return one, take a call, etc. it is not the time so much, as it probably doesn’t add up to 30-40 minutes per day, but it is the break in concentration. How can you give your work full concentration when your personal life is intruding every few minutes? He does not go an hour without being on his phone.

It got really bad this past Saturday when there was a relationship crisis going on. I know I don’t have a right or any means to control what goes on in my employee’s mind while he is at work. But Saturday he was stressing over personal stuff to the point that it affected his work. He ended the day with a near melt down. What kind of rules have you experienced about cell phone use on the job? What did you feel about the rules?

This was and is my response:
You may not have any right to control what goes on in someone’s head, but you have every right to expect your employee to actually WORK for the money you are paying them! My solution is usually to hit them in the wallet- “Suzie, this is the third personal phone call you’ve taken in the last 10 minutes. Why don’t you clock out, and take all the time you need to get everything settled so that you can focus on your work?” or “Billy, you seem pretty distracted today, why don’t you just take the rest of the day off to take care of things. We’ll see you tomorrow when you are more focused.”

Everyone has emergencies that must be dealt with, and if this is the case, they may appreciate your understanding. However, when it is coming out of their paycheck, they may discover that the matter isn’t quite as important as they first thought!!

Grooming School for the Winter Months

I heard a Zoo Director talking about caring for your pet in the harsh winter conditions. Even if you don’t own lions or zebras, all pets need a little extra care during the winter months. If you can, winter is the perfect time to take a grooming class or go to a cheaper grooming school to get your pet cared for, as their furry coats will only go so far!

Grooming School Owner Works Cat Show

Ellie Radzovitch of Hampstead gives Pixeldust, a Seal Lynx Point Himalayan, a grooming at the Dover Cat Show at the Middle School on Saturday. It was fun for the kids to watch an expert groomer in action, and the kids all got to give at least one of the cats a pat on the head too.

Ice Storm Encourages Officials to Use Grooming Schools

Last month’s ice storm has prompted many New Hampshire communities to evaluate their disaster response plans, including how they handle pets. Along with the chilly residents, dogs and cats are in need of warm shelter due to the power outages. Local grooming schools and kennels have been used as emergency shelters.

Weak Economy Affecting Grooming Schools

As the local economy has weakened, the owner of the West University pet grooming and boarding business has cut back on her workers’ hours, leaving her to pick up the slack. Upgraded Humane Society More Like a Grooming School

For the dogs and cats who take up temporary residence in the year-old Riverside Humane Society Pet Adoption Center, their new quarters are like the Mission Inn compared to the old facility. The old facility was more like a budget motel, said Ronna L. Kadow, executive director of the facility. The animals will enjoy more room indoor and out at the new pad. Even the lighting is better!

How I learned it in Grooming School

When I need to do a dog longer than the Wahl SS combs, I do the body,
with the combs and scissor the rest. I do very few dogs that need a
longer comb than the longest Wahl comb. Good to train my clients
that way!

Personal Note from the grooming school blogger

Personally speaking, between Sunday and tonite, I’m kind of pouting. I
got to be involved in all of the Inaugural hoopla in 1997. Including
sitting 18 rows from the first step of the Capitol for the swearing in,
our designated path from the Metro stop at Union Station to our seats
had to stop while THE motorcade cut through, (skipped the parade,
didn’t want to get sick). And the Ball was the very last time my
husband was in uniform… he retired from the Army on Feb 1st.
Nostalgic, jealous, are the kinds of emotions flooding me right now, at
32 minutes to 11:30 Eastern. HOWEVER, this year I’m glad not to be
putting out all of the cash that it cost me to participate.

Someone on my statewide political list posted the other day that 5
hotel rooms had just come open, about $380 per night, minimum 3 nights,
and that’s before all of the funky DC taxes, etc. I cracked up
knowing how quickly they’d go. Thank God we had friends to stay
with…

Memorable, yes, but Patty I think your week’s highlight was as grand,
maybe even moreso. Thanks for letting us know!
